Acne
Acne affects people of all ages in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, blocked pores, cysts and pimples. These usually occur on the face, chest or back.
Causes of Acne
There is not one factor that causes acne. Acne happens when there is a buildup of the skin’s natural oils which stimulate bacteria causing the skin to become inflamed, which in turn may result in a pimple and cysts where the oil can break through to the surface. Acne is not caused by dirt, or by certain foods as is commonly believed. Hormones are also usually not a factor in most people. At times there are drugs that may increase the chance of acne.
Treatment of Acne
You can choose to find treatment for your acne whenever you feel it starts to bother you. Treatments you should follow yourself include not picking the pimples and applying hot compresses to them. You can also try cleansing the skin twice a day and use a mild exfoliant. You can also try using antibacterial cleaners, and wipes or creams to minimize the oil and bacteria on the affected areas.
If these methods do not work for you then you may visit your doctor for treatment. The doctor can prescribe certain antibiotics and antibacterials, as well as medications (such as retin-A) good for unclogging pores. Treatment will probably start in the form of an oral antibiotic. Some oral contraceptives can also reduce acne. Other treatments may be used including cortisone injections, chemical peels, laser treatment and surgical treatment for scars.
Treatment will usually take time, and different methods may be required. It will take a while for each treatment to work, so you must be patient.
