What is Sexual Addiction?

Sexual addiction is a term used to describe somebody with an obsession with sex or intense sex drive, and does not mean they necessarily go on to become sex offenders. Sex addicts will usually justify their behaviour irrationally and deny that they have a problem.

Sexual addiction can also be associated with taking risks, where addicts will engage in activities despite the fact that there will be negative consequences. These risks will involve physical as well as mental injury, where there is often an impact on work or social life and damaged relationships.

In some cases sexual addiction does lead to illegal activities which can include exhibitionism, molestation or other actions, but sex addicts will not necessarily become offenders.

Types of Sexual Addiction

Behaviours that are associated with sexual addiction are varied, and can include compulsive masturbation, rape, voyeurism, exhibitionism, prostitution, unsafe sex, pornography, multiple sexual partners, extra-marital affairs and obsessive dating.

Sexual addicts will perform the act due to their addiction, and will usually have no emotional bond with their partners. They may also experience guilt and shame as well as a lack of control as well as negative consequences in personal relationships, work, social life and so on.

Treatment of Sexual Addiction

Treatment can only begin when sex addicts admit that they have a problem, which can take time and may be as a result of a consequence such as losing a job or breaking up with their partners. Treatment will involve finding ways of controlling the behaviour and developing a healthy sexuality. This can involve education, counselling and support for the individual and family members.

Medication may also be used in some cases such as the medication used to treat obsessive compulsive disorders, including Prozac and Anafranil.
