Still a Difference in Gender Accomplishment - Suprised? Why?
I read a new story almost every week about some study which shows men are still dominating some area of human accomplishment–whether it be the workplace, sports attention, education, etc.
A story I read yesterday is another along these lines. Why are people so surprised men are more accomplished (on average) than women? Or why blacks are less acomplished than caucasions? Sure, there are exceptions (our newly elected president being one–Obama ‘08!), but the numbers don’t lie.
And they speak loudly: a new study shows the while the number of women getting a doctoral degree is starting to approach the number of men receiving an equivalent degree, the number of women on the advisory boards reviewing theses for these degrees are slim in comparison to their male counterparts.
Who dominates the title of thesis supervisor? 70% are men. The dominating gender in evaluation board members? 70% are men. Board chairpeople? 99% are men.
The fact white men got hundreds of years as a head start still affects the state of affairs today. Anybody who doesn’t see this cause and effect just hasn’t been paying attention.
