Flu Bug Resistant to Treatment Now in United States

The CDC sent a notice to doctors on Friday warning about a new flu bug which has shown to be resistant to the flu drug Tamiflu. An upside to this news is the fact the Tamiflu-resistant strain is no more harmful than any other strain.

The amount of strains which are resistant to treatment has soared, which is not unexpected. What is unexpected in the rate at which they have become resistant. While a minority of the strains last year were resistant, that numbers is now above 90% for some types of the virus.

The good news is the use of a vaccine is still overwhelmingly effective in treating the disease. The CDC encourages everyone to receive a flu vaccine if possible, so there is no need to depend on drugs like Tamiflu for a cure.
